There was an interesting article I came across yesterday on why people exercise and go to the gym.

Now, for the purposes of this message today, I’m going to apply the same reasoning to what we do at DPM – training outside obviously, cause the message rings true just the same.

The reasons were a few – to be healthier, look better, feel better etc etc.

But if you look a bit deeper, there were some other valid reasons that are more important to people.

One of them being some personal downtime.

With kids and work and everything else that goes on we don’t get enough time for ourselves. Having some forced time locked into your diary to get out and exercise gives you this.

And of course you’ll also get the benefits that exercise gives you!

Another reason mentioned was a big thing – the community, and the relationships that you build from working out with the same group of people year in, year out.

I’m proud to say that a lot of outside long term friendships have developed as a result of our little group sessions over the years.

This rings true even more so now cause of the way the year has gone.

And especially if you live by yourself, as some DPMers do, they get the social interaction in person that they may no longer be getting cause they’re working from home.

This is what happens when you have a bunch of likeminded people, of similar age in the same place with a similar goal.

It also helps that I’ve always had a rule at DPM that I only want you around if you’re the type of person who’d I actually have a drink or a coffee with outside of our sessions.

Those who don’t meet that criteria don’t last long.

For the benefit of everyone else.

I think all of this was reinforced after our 7 week lock down earlier this year where all our small group sessions had to go to zoom workouts.

They were good and filled the gap.

But it didn’t allow for the personal connection and interaction that is an essential part of what we do.

All of these reasons definitely make it easier to get up before the crack of dawn and get amongst it.

It gets even easier now as the weather gets nicer and the sun comes up earlier.

PS – and if you know someone who’d be keen to enjoy the benefits that a supportive small group can provide, please pass this link onto them
