That sugar tax thing was back in the news on Monday.
Seems every couple of months it gets a run.
Someone, either a health expert or a pollie make a media push for it.
Where do you stand?
Yeah or nah?
For me, I think it’s a goer.
Sure, there’s a few things that need to be ironed out with it.
Like making sure that a tax actually gets passed on to the government initiatives that it’s supposed to be used for.
Instead of just making the profit margins of the food manufactures even larger.
That should be a no-brainer.
But often those in power don’t exactly make the no-brainer decisions do they?
Anyways, those who doubt it would work check out the Mexicans:
Since a sugar tax was introduced in 2014, Mexican hospitals have already reported a drop in obesity levels by 0.7 percent.
That may not seem huge but remember it usually takes years, sometimes even decades (not just 2 short years) to see any real change from a new public health policy.
Here’s the deal.
Cigarettes and alcohol both get taxed to the heavens.
They are both legal products.
Just like sugar.
So why not give it a go.
We know that people can’t help themselves so we have to have this approach.
It won’t stop us using it totally.
But it might make us evaluate how we use it if we have to pay financially.
Cause we all know that we often don’t care about our health until we don’t have it.
And I’m not sitting here on my high horse saying I never eat sugar.
I love a coke every now and then.
I love a sugar filled treat too.
But I’d be happy to be a premium to have it when I do.
Cause when you think about it we’re paying for it one way or another right?
