We all know that brain of ours is a bastard.
Especially if yours is anything like mine.
Negative thoughts going through it.
You’re not living up to expectations you place on yourself…
You’re not where you should be…
Rarely giving the pat on the back even when it is over-deserved.
Ever felt like that?
Surely I’m not on my own.
Sometimes it gets you down.
And I happened to come across an article today that helps explain why our brains are bastards.
“Six sneaky tricks your mind secretly plays on you”
This Psychologist found that our brains are wired to make shortcuts to enhance our survival.
And the last one is a big one that you may fall into from time to time.
I know I do
Current moment bias
What is it? Prioritising pleasure and having difficulty imagining ourselves in the future, and altering our behaviours and expectations to cater for that.
Example: Eating a huge slice of cake even though you’re trying to lose weight.
It’s a bugger of a thing isn’t it?
We work our arses off to get somewhere.
And undo it in a moment of ‘stuff it’.
But it’s all good.
So long as you are aware of it we can than introduce things to help us stay on track when you’re planning to.
And saving your cheat meals for when you really want em.
The Psychologist in the article recommends
The best way to get around it is to try to be more conscious and mindful in your everyday behaviours.
Make of that what you will.
