You know the brain is a funny thing.

Especially if you’re stubborn.

Which I guess I can be.

Just ask my wife…

I don’t know about you, but the one thing I find, that once I decide that I’m going to do something, well, I’m going to do it.

And what you previously thought was too hard, or just not the right timing for or whatever,

well it doesn’t matter, cause you just find a way to get it done.

Stuff that you only just found hard to say no to a week ago becomes easy,

all because you’ve laid the first steps in place to achieving whatever you got fixed in your head that you were going to do.

Personally, for me, it was like I mentioned last week, having 2 weeks off the drink.

If you missed it, it was just like I did earlier this year, to break the cycle of having a drink just because.

Because there was always a reason to have one.

Well, I could find a reason quite easily anyways.

Mainly cause of that old Frank The Tank, Will Ferrell line from Old School “Once it hits your lips, it’s sooo good!”

But, on Saturday I realised that this 2 weeks would go past a day I’d organised with a mate for a catch up and a punt on Derby Day. Which involves a beer or three.

I thought I’ve got two options.

Start my 2 weeks that day – so nothing on Saturday night and Sunday like I’d normally do.

Or I could go through the weekend as normal, start on Monday and finish early on the Friday.

But, like I said, I’m stubborn.

I wanted 2 weeks.

So I started on the Saturday.

Which was actually a good thing in hindsight.

I just ripped the band aid off and started right then.

The other alternative was to have all week to think I’ve got to break the usual weekend cycle of a drink or three with dinner and winding down after the kids are in bed.

But you know what?

It was easy.

Even passed up a glass of wine on Monday night from my favourite winery.

And on Tuesday when it was warmer than usual I probably would’ve cracked a beer cooking the barbie ’cause it was a warm day’ just because.

Just because I got it in my head this is what I’m going to do.

Have you ever noticed something similar when you’re starting off something?

It’s like putting the blinkers on and you’re focused.

The cool thing is I know I’ll lose a kg or two as a result of just doing this one thing.

So the main point of this today is not to tell you how I’m going, but to reassure you that once you start something it does get easier.

Call it a bit of motivation reminder if you will.

It becomes the new normal.

Sure, you may find it a little hard at the start. Especially if what you’re doing is totally different to what you have been doing.

But, if you’ve done it before, your body will remember what it’s supposed to do.

And you’ll be flying.
