Some more new research came my way last week, this time from a study done in Norway, that once again shows the benefit of exercise and a reduced risk of dementia in older people.
They found that people who were active throughout the study (a 20 year period) proved to have a 50% less likely chance of developing dementia.
50% less chance.
That’s no small number!
Wow. As a betting man, I’ll take those odds any day.
Straight from the paper:
“Maintaining or improving cardiorespiratory fitness over time may be a target to reduce risk of dementia incidence and mortality, delay onset, and increase longevity after diagnosis. Our data highlight the importance of assessing cardiorespiratory fitness in health risk assessment for people at risk of dementia”.
This research is actually pretty timely as I was just thinking about this last week.
I happened to drive past a nursing home and I noticed the front carpark area was all roped off and had a bunch of witches hats out.
Then I saw a bunch of residents with walking frames doing laps or whatever with a young trainer bloke obviously giving them a workout.
I thought to myself that’s pretty cool, then later that afternoon this exact research comes across my linked in feed.
The universe must be talking to me and as a result, I’m talking to you to reinforce the importance of doing what we do every day.
And also to prove that it’s never too late to start as indicated here.
I’ve had clients start with me in their 40’s and 50’s who’ve never done any type of physical activity before.
Turns out it doesn’t take them long to realise that they actually enjoy doing things – especially often boxing which is interesting. Must be the sensation of hitting things?
Anyways, whatever you do, make sure you’re doing something.
Your older self might well thank you for it, especially if you’re like me and have a family history of dementia.
PS – If you’re thinking you need to get back in the habit and do something again, did you see what I mentioned yesterday with my special Click Frenzy offer?
