There’s a very interesting hot take that I came across in the Sunday paper on, funnily enough, Sunday.
And the opinion that got my attention, from an Aussie Gastric Surgeon goes against one of the oldest, and most often used, quotes.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”
Well, not according to Dr Andrew Renault who wants us to stop eating breakfast altogether.
Well, he thinks it is contributing to our obesity epidemic because, among other things, our bodies aren’t given much of a break from digesting food and as a result can’t reduce our insulin levels.
I can’t say I’m against his point.
I’ve been practicing intermittent fasting for a number of years now, after I was initially pretty cautious of it when I first came across it.
I find I eat less each day as a result.
Sure, some days I don’t last as long as I intended too when hunger wins out.
But for the most part it’s a goer.
Dr Renault is pushing for a fasting window greater than my one – he’s saying only eat between 1pm-7pm. So a small 6 hour window.
And he doesn’t make you count calories.
And the only other restriction is on processed carbs where he recommends you minimise them.
This isn’t totally outrageous as some places push a 24 hour fast or something along the lines of the 5-2 diet where you only eat 500 calories for 2 days a week and whatever for the rest of the week.
So what do you think?
I can guarantee you that approach would work and it’s not as crazy as it may first seem,
especially if you’re new to the idea of intermittent fasting.
The main take home point though is to find something that works for you.
With the DPM food plan I normally start people off by having breakfast then once they’ve gone past this first stage of their weight loss journey they can choose whether they want to look down the intermittent fasting route.
As I say, find something that works for you.
And if you need help, you know where to find me.
